Keyboard jockeys and guitar heroes

Found Frets on Fire a while ago, and loved it. Guitar Hero using a keyboard as a guitar? Incredibly nerdy, and I loved it. My old keyboard, already old and worn, was chucked for a new one which has the functions keys closer togeather (as F1-5 are used extensively in FoF). Logitech Ultra-Flat is a really neat keyboard. No flashing gadgetry or idiotic multimedia keys or whatever the heck people seem to find necessary in a friggin’ keyboard nowadays.

There are, of course, a few snags. It’s small, very compact – which is good, and bad. The good part is that it takes up a lot less space. The downside is that several keys, including del, ins, pgUp, pgDn, Home and End have been displaced in order to save space. Disturbing, to say the least. I guess I’ll get used to it.

And my fingers seem unused to a flat, light shape – when playing FoF, they kind of cramp up becuase they think I need to hold on ridiculously hard in order to not drop the keyboard. Annoying. I guess I’ll get used to it.

Right now, I’m trying to get used to writing on what’s essentially a flat surface. Speaking as someone who’s always favored tilted keyboards, this is a new experience.

Oh well, at least it’s not completely silent. I hate silent keyboards. Pressing a key should make it go “click”. It’s just one of those things…

While replacing your old machine gun keyboard that rival the neighbor’s kids in sound volume and annoyance factor is a great relief for everyone ever spent a few minutes in the same room as your keyboard while you lurk on forums.

We love silent keyboards, at least when others use them.
