Once again I find myself struggling with this magnificently hellish beast that is the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. For those of you who don’t know already, ALSA is supposed to be the new wonderful solution to sound in Linux; the old OSS has become stagnant and, well, old… ALSA is a modern architecture, capable of all sorts of neat new stuff.

Except, apprarently, FUCKING WORKING. This GOD DAMNED thing has been my enemy for years. It works just fine on most people’s computers – in fact, it works just fine on several of mine. Only my main comp really has any problems… It seems that my Soundblaster Live 5.1, the oldie but goldie that it is, just won’t play nice with ALSA. I know the card itself works just fine (in fact, I’m using it to explore the finer points of Ace Frehley’s solo career as I type this). In Windows, it works as well as ever. In Ubuntu, I can use the old OSS drivers to listen to music, play games etc. It’s just ALSA that won’t play nice.

And I’ve got this nagging feeling that I’ve done all this bevore. When I first upgraded my Hardy to Intrepid, and PulseAudio/ALSA became the default for everything. And now, well, I recently tried the Jaunty beta and it didn’t agree with me at all (way, WAY too slow) and I decided it was time to reinstall the whole shebang.

And, of course, I don’t seem to have noted down ANYWHERE how I solved this fucking bitch of a problem. So now I guess I’ll spend my leisure time for the next 4-5 days or so trying to fix this motherfucker. On friday, my spanking new soundcard should arrive, together with a 1TB S-ATA harddrive for my aging server.

Promise to self: Should I solve the ALSA problem, I will note down the solution here. Perhaps someone else has problems with hissing, crackling and popping ALSA.

Idag: Hela eftermiddagen gick åt till en helt vedervärdig föreläsning. Skolledningen hade dragit in ett helt fruktansvärt helvete vid namn Jörgen Oom. Tänk er den värsta sortens moderat/folkpartist, som pratar om att vi måste anpassa oss till “verkligheten” – ja ni vet, vi har hört grejerna förut:

Marknadsanpassning av löner, individuell lönesättning, ursch så dåligt det är att vi svenskar inte är stolta och att vi ska vara så lagom hela tiden, och fy vad det är jobbigt med jantelagen, och vi är alldeles nerknarkade med trygghet i Sverige med alla jobbiga skyddsnät, och vi lever längst men är också sjukskrivna längst för folk är så dåliga att de sjukskriver sig när de mår dåligt ojojoj, och det är så synd om cheferna för alla bara klankar ner och är avundsjuka, och alla kan vara bäst på nånting, och vi svenskar är felkopplade i huvudet för att vi inte tycker att det är något bra att vissa vinner och andra inte, och vi borde ha betyg lägre i åldrarna för det har de i England, och vi är så dåliga på KUNSKAP så vi behöver satsa mer på det…

Ja, ni vet det där. Sånt som får en att känna att skolledningen kunde använt samma pengar på att köpa in fler datorer eller läromedel. Sånt som faktiskt får en att känna att skolledningen hellre hade kunnat kasta pengarna i sjön.

Jag tror att Jörgen Oom vill väl. Att hans verklighet verkligen ser ut sådär. Att det finns en Verklighet, som är skapad av Marknaden och är helt omöjlig att påverka, och allt man kan göra är att med ett Glatt Humör foga in sig och anpassa sig till det. Jag tror att i hans skruvade hjärna är världen sådan, och det finns inget att göra åt. Dessutom är det självklart så att vi både måste ha mänskliga rättigheter och mänskliga skyldigheter. För inte kan det vara så att varje människa är lika mycket värd, och att det finns vissa rättigheter man har oavsett vad man i övrigt gör med sitt liv?

Jag håller såklart inte med. Länge leve jantelagen. Våga vara lagom. Det spelar ingen roll att du inte är bäst, du är lika mycket värd som människa ändå. Ingen människa är viktigare, eller mer värd, än någon annan.

Dra åt helvete, Jörgen Oom. Du är en bra föreläsare. Synd bara att dina åsikter är helt fruktansvärt marknadsfascistoida. Synd att du spenderade halva föreläsningen med att aktivt förlöjliga sjukskrivna, arbetslösa, sådana som påpekar brister i förslag, och framförallt alla som har någon form av vänstersympatier.

Got myself a apsnking new EEE 900 16G a few months back. I’ve been having fun with it ever since. Despite its size, it’s a surprisingly agile and flexible machine, which has provided me endless hours of what I call Fun: mucking around finding “just the right solutions”. You know, the kind of thing most people think is just another chore; reinstalling and testing different operating systems, system optimizing, etc etc. In other words, what normal people thibnk of as Boring.

In any case, I first chose a normal dualboot windows xp professional / Ubuntu EEE solution, having decided early on that the default Xandros-based operating system didn’t really suit me. In fact, i’d go so var as to call it “useless” for a man of my tastes. In any case, having installed XP from a fast SD card, I was looking for new challenges. I found the perfect one in installing XP onto an SDHC card without the use of an external DVD-rom. After multiple attempts, I succeeded using a combination of this guide and this guide. I might post a howto in the future, if anyone’s interested. All I needed was a few files from the interweb, an USB stick and a SDHC card.

Unfortunately, my original setup was fried in the process. Of course, I got a backup, but since I no longer needed the dualboot solution now that I can boot XP from an SD-card, and since my Ubuntu EEE install got corrupted and uglified during its upgrade to Intrepid, I decided it was time to start over.

Enter EEEbuntu. I got kind of annoyed when Ubuntu EEE changed its name to “Easy Peasy” and I decided to look at my options. EEEbuntu seemed to fit the bill: Better-looking background and overall theme, the addition of an EEE config/tweaking utility, and many other little improvements made me want to try it.

Well, now I have. Its desktop mode is all I could ever want of a regular desktop mode; there’s even a “base install” with a minimum of fuss. Its EEE config utils were great. Unfortunately, I could find no way to quickly switch between regular desktop mode and the Netbook Redux interface, which is much better when you don’t have access to a mouse (touchpads – eeeew). Tried, and failed, to install the desktop-switcher applet. And anyways, the Netbook Redux-based interface abailable in EEEbuntu was sorely lacking in styole and ease of use. This, I discovered, was where Ubuntu EEE excelled.

And so, I now return to Ubuntu EEE. Luckily, Linux is very flexible – I should be able to get the EEE config/tweaking utils from EEEbuntu to work in it (just as I got UCview from te original Xandros to work in Ubuntu EEE), and even though the name Easy Peasy is kind of crap, there’s nothing to stop me from changing the loading screen, the login screen and the destkop background into something I can live with.
